Why choose a designer glass basin for your bathroom?

Designer glass basins: a journey into colour and light

What makes a washbasin a work of art? With a glass basin, the answer begins with light. A glass basin is made from solid glass and usually sits on top of the vanity surface, bringing colour, depth and reflections to the bathroom. At Italian manufacturer SICIS® in Ravenna, for example, it is made from lead-free soda-lime glass, with a fine grooved finish inside.1

Join us in the world of designer glass basins: we show why glass is so fascinating, how light and colour interact, how a single colour accent achieves a minimalist look and why glass mosaic is the perfect partner. Then we turn to practical matters: installation, care and a buying guide to make your decision easier.

01 · Material Why choose a glass basin? A material with depth

Why designer glass basins are so captivating

Glass does not stop light; it carries it along. While ceramic reflects light at its surface, coloured glass lets it travel into its depths, making it seem to glow from within. A smooth glass surface can make cleaning easier. Suitable cleaners also depend on the decoration, coating and manufacturer's instructions.2 A glass basin's everyday resistance depends on factors including the glass type, manufacturing, decoration and correct use.3

Is glass in the bathroom too beautiful to be practical? Certainly not, but it helps to understand it. Water marks and limescale show more clearly on glass than on white ceramic, and it does not like heavy objects or abrupt temperature changes.3 Knowing this gives you a piece of craftsmanship that looks slightly different every morning, which is exactly what the following sections explore.

02 · Light Playing with light Grooves, reflections and colour depth

One basin, many faces. Many designer glass basins have an internal texture that plays with light. Italian manufacturer SICIS® calls it Rigato: fine concentric grooves that refract the light.4 In the morning, this makes turquoise look clear as a lagoon; at midday it sparkles, and in warm evening light it becomes rich and mysterious. The basin is more than a static furnishing: it is a small object of light.

How do you bring out the best in this play of light? Position the glass basin where daylight falls from the side, and add indirect lighting above the mirror or beneath the vanity top for the evening. This creates coloured reflections on the surface and wall, letting your bathroom tell a new story every day.

03 · Colours Coloured glass basins for every style From turquoise to gold

Colour that comes from within. Traditional coloured glass is coloured with metals throughout the material rather than painted. Cobalt gives glass its blue, iron and chromium produce green, gold colours it red and silver gives it an amber hue.5 In glass coloured throughout its mass, colour is part of the material and looks different from different angles. Other basins may have additional finishes or coatings; check the information for the particular version.

Which colour suits your bathroom? Turquoise and blue look fresh with white walls and light wood: ideal for those who love the sea. Emerald and jade green bring nature inside and harmonise with brass, dark marble and plants. Violet is a bold choice and looks particularly elegant with grey and concrete. Gold, finally, turns the basin into a jewel, especially against black or warm travertine.

04 · Minimalism A minimalist bathroom with a glass basin Less is more

Minimalism with designer glass basins

One statement is enough. Minimalism means focus, not an absence of colour. In a calm bathroom with light walls, a simple wood or stone top and plenty of open space, a coloured glass basin becomes the sole, deliberately chosen accent. Everything else takes a supporting role, creating the tranquillity we love in pared-back rooms.

And the fittings? They recede into the background. A wall-mounted tap keeps the top clear and looks particularly minimal;6 an open vanity lets you see below the basin, where a beautifully shaped designer trap matching the tap colour completes the picture. Fewer objects on the top also mean fewer surfaces to wipe dry.

05 · Mosaic Glass basins and glass mosaic The perfect duo

Glass on glass: when basin and base share the same material language, the wash area feels unified. Some manufacturers design the two together from the outset; SICIS®, for example, created its Doh basins to match Colibrì mosaics.7 Two approaches achieve this: tone-on-tone, with basin and mosaic in the same colour family, or a gradient that becomes lighter or darker away from the basin, turning the top into a picture.

Why mosaic in particular? The art has a long tradition in Italy, especially Ravenna: the city's early Christian mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries have been UNESCO World Heritage since 1996.8 SICIS®, founded in 1987, is also based there.9 Hand-set glass tesserae make every surface unique, while translucent grout lets the colours flow into one another.

06 · Installation Installation, taps and designer traps Making everything work together

Installing a glass basin: height and taps

Start with the right height. Plan the top of the basin rim to suit the users, use and room. The 85 to 95 cm stated here is only a planning example, not a universally applicable standard height.10 Since a countertop basin sits on the surface, plan the vanity top lower accordingly. A round designer glass basin such as Doh by SICIS® weighs around 5 kg, rests on a flat glass base 6.4 cm in diameter and has a waste outlet with a standard G 1¼″ thread, without a tap hole or overflow.4 The countertop, supporting structure and fixings must suit the basin, cut-outs and use; the basin's own weight alone does not establish installation suitability or load-bearing approval.

Which tap fits? If the basin has no tap hole, choose a tall deck-mounted tap, approximately 20 to 38 cm high depending on the model, or an elegant wall-mounted tap.6 Spout height, reach, jet direction and flow must suit the basin shape. A distance of 10 to 15 cm is only a planning example here and does not guarantee splash-free use.10 Add a waste fitting for a basin without an overflow and, for open vanities, a designer trap matching the tap colour.

To be honest, the most common concern about glass basins is limescale. Water droplets and limescale marks show sooner on glass than on white ceramic.11 Regular rinsing and careful drying with a soft, suitable cloth can reduce deposits. Use only cleaners and descalers approved by the manufacturer for the glass, decoration and coating. Even diluted vinegar or glass cleaner is not suitable for every version.4

What should you avoid? Abrasive cleaners, rough sponges and chlorine-based cleaners, as well as thermal shock, such as very hot water immediately after ice-cold water.3 No blanket temperature limit for all models can be inferred from this; the manufacturer's instructions are decisive. An appropriate care routine helps maintain the appearance, but cannot generally rule out signs of use and changes.

Frequently asked questions about glass basins

Which tap suits a glass basin?

Because countertop glass basins usually have no tap hole, they require a tall deck-mounted tap approximately 20 to 38 cm high or a wall-mounted tap.6 Spout height, reach, jet direction and flow must suit the basin shape. A distance of 10 to 15 cm is only a planning example here and does not guarantee splash-free use.10

At what height should a glass basin be installed?

The 85 to 95 cm to the top edge is only a planning example here. The appropriate height depends on the users, use and room.10 Subtract the height of the countertop basin from your desired height to obtain the vanity-top height. Read more in our glossary: The right height for your vanity.

Round or oval: which glass basin suits my bathroom?

SICIS® Doh glass basins come in a round shape with a diameter of 40 cm or an oval shape measuring 50 × 40 cm.4 The round shape looks sculptural and takes up little space; the oval offers more washing area and complements wide vanity tops.

Are glass basins suitable for hot water?

Whether the basin is suitable for hot water, and up to what temperature, depends on the particular version and the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as very hot water immediately after ice-cold water.3 Observe the permitted water temperatures for the particular model.

How do I remove limescale from a glass basin?

Rinsing and careful drying with a suitable soft cloth can reduce limescale marks. For existing deposits, use only a descaler approved for the particular surface and rinse according to the manufacturer's instructions. Diluted vinegar is not suitable for every decoration or coating; avoid abrasive tools.4

Which bathroom furniture suits a glass basin?

Washstands with a suitable continuous countertop of stone, wood or glass mosaic can work well visually. However, the countertop, supporting structure, cut-outs and fixings must suit the basin and use. The weight of around 5 kg in the named model example does not, on its own, prove that suitability.4 Find inspiration in our luxury bathroom furniture guide.

Which glass mosaic matches my glass basin?

SICIS® designed Doh to coordinate with Colibrì mosaics;7 many shades at Tiamont have the same name as the matching mosaic.15 Our professional installation and grouting guide shows how to install glass mosaic cleanly.

Where can I buy designer glass basins?

FAQs - Frequently asked questions

A glass basin is a washbasin made entirely of glass. High-quality models are made from toughened safety glass, making them robust and suitable for everyday use.

Glass basins offer a modern, luxurious design and a smooth, non-porous surface to which dirt and limescale barely adhere. They are hygienic, easy to clean and add an exceptional touch to the bathroom, creating a stylish focal point.

A glass basin stands out for its distinctive appearance, smooth surface and ease of care. Ceramic basins, on the other hand, are classics known for their robustness and resistance to chemicals. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal taste: those seeking a modern design highlight choose glass, while ceramic offers timeless, proven appeal.

Glass basins made from high-quality toughened glass (e.g. quartz or lead-free glass) are surprisingly robust and resilient in everyday use. Under normal use, they are almost as sturdy and resistant to breakage as ceramic basins, but heavy impacts and extreme temperature changes should still be avoided.

A high-quality glass basin hardly scratches during normal use and does not fade. The colours are usually incorporated throughout the material itself, so the basin retains its brilliant appearance over time without fading.

A soft cloth and a mild glass cleaner or a little washing-up liquid are sufficient for daily cleaning. It is important to avoid abrasive or harsh cleaning products so that the glass surface retains its glossy appeal and does not become scratched.

Many freestanding glass countertop basins have no overflow hole. This is mainly for aesthetic reasons – without an overflow, the basin’s shape remains completely uninterrupted and looks particularly elegant and minimalist. In everyday use, this simply means that you should not leave the tap running unattended, as there is no overflow through which the water can drain automatically.

A glass basin without an overflow should be fitted with a waste fitting without an overflow function. Permanently open waste fittings are often used, allowing water to drain continuously. This ensures that the basin does not overflow, even when it has no overflow hole.

No special trap is required. Glass basins have standard connections, just like other washbasins. For aesthetic reasons, however, many people choose a decorative designer trap (for example, chrome-plated), as it is visible beneath the open basin and contributes to the elegant look.

Glass basin prices vary depending on size, design and manufacturer. Simpler models are available from around 100–200 euros, while elaborate designer pieces or bespoke models can cost several hundred to over a thousand euros. Glass basins therefore fall within a similar price range to high-quality ceramic or mineral-cast basins.
