01 · Origin
Grown by the Nile.Egyptian Giza cotton in the ELS class.
The cotton for the Super Pile bath mat comes from Egypt: 100 % Giza cotton in the Extra Long Staple fibre class. Extra Long Staple, or ELS, is the class of particularly long cotton fibres that can be spun into fine, even and strong yarns.
The cotton grows along the Nile, where the river's water, fertile alluvial soil and long, sunny summers come together. These conditions allow fibres to mature that are longer, finer and stronger than those of ordinary cotton.

02 · Hand-picking
Picked by hand.To keep every fibre intact.
When the bolls open in late summer, harvest begins by the Nile. The Egyptian cotton for the bath mat is picked by hand. Only ripe, fully opened bolls are selected, leaving behind leaves and unripe bolls.
Machines would break the long fibres and introduce plant debris. Picking by hand preserves the fibre's full length, keeping it clean and undamaged. It is this intact length that you later feel as a smooth, soft touch beneath your feet.
From boll to yarn
- Ripe bollsOnly fully opened bolls are picked by hand.
- Clean fibreVery few leaves or plant fragments enter the cotton.
- Combed yarnCombing removes short fibres from the cotton. The long fibres remain, ready to become an even yarn.

03 · Colour and atmosphere
British Green 298 in the bathroomThe shade of leather, wood and tradition.
British Green 298 is a very dark, rich green with a cool, almost blue undertone. In the generous pile, the colour looks especially deep and precious; in bright light, the loops reveal an emerald glow.
This green combines tradition, permanence and quiet confidence. Brass, walnut and white marble create a bathroom in the style of a British clubhouse; with black and gold, British Green 298 looks both glamorous and modern.

04 · Fibre, yarn and weave
Long fibres.A dense, even pile.
The quality of a bath mat begins with fibre length. Extra Long Staple is the class of particularly long cotton fibres. They are significantly longer than the fibres of ordinary Upland cotton, used in most everyday textiles.
Fibre length comparison, schematic
Material detailExtra Long Staple (ELS)ELS terry detail of a Super Pile towel
Long fibres can be spun into finer, more even yarns with greater tensile strength. With fewer fibre ends protruding from the yarn, the terry feels smoother and sheds less lint, even where bare feet tread on it every day.
The weave
The Super Pile bath mat is a terry fabric woven from three yarn systems. The ground warp and weft form the supporting fabric, while the pile warp forms long loops above it on both sides. With 100 % Giza cotton, each of these three systems consists of Egyptian cotton, not just the visible pile.
With dense pile on both sides, the bath mat is reversible. A border all around in the same shade gives the surface a calm frame. The yarn is combed: combing removes short fibres, leaving the long ELS fibres for an even, soft pile.
1200 g/m²: what it means
Fabric weight indicates how much cotton there is in a square metre of terry. For the Super Pile bath mat, it is 1200 g/m²; this figure refers to the surface area, not the weight of an individual bath mat. It denotes a dense, heavy terry with plenty of cotton in a compact area: full and sumptuous as you step out of the shower or bath.

07 · Everyday use and care
Keep the pilefull, soft and absorbent.
The Super Pile bath mat absorbs moisture straight after your shower and feels soft beneath your feet. With so much cotton in its dense pile, it then needs a little time to dry: spread it out after use so air can reach both sides.
- Wash at 40 °CFor the first few washes, wash British Green 298 separately or with similarly dark shades. Separate light and dark shades and do not overload the drum.
- Mild liquid detergent, no fabric softenerNo bleach or optical brighteners. Fabric softener coats the fibres with a film and reduces absorbency.
- No hooks or zipsWash separately: buttons, zips, hooks and hook-and-loop fasteners can snag the loops.
- Tumble dry on a medium heatThis restores volume and fullness to the pile. Allow it to dry completely and give it a quick shake; ironing is not necessary.
- A snagged loop? Do not pull it.Simply trim it to pile height with scissors; the fabric stays intact.

09 · Questions and answers
Good to knowabout your Super Pile bath mat.
What makes Giza ELS cotton so precious?
Three things come together: fibre, origin and harvest. Extra Long Staple denotes particularly long fibres that are both fine and strong. The cotton grows by the Nile in Egypt and is picked by hand to keep the long fibres intact.
How does the Super Pile bath mat feel?
Soft, full and velvety. The long fibres form dense, even loops that yield gently beneath bare feet. At 1200 g/m², the bath mat feels sumptuous and substantial, absorbing moisture straight after your shower.
Why does the Super Pile bath mat cost more than ordinary bath mats?
The price reflects the material and craftsmanship: hand-picked Egyptian Giza cotton in the Extra Long Staple class, combed yarn, 1200 g/m² of dense terry with pile on both sides, and made-to-order production in Portugal.
Does the bath mat shed lint?
Very little. Long, combed fibres produce a yarn with few loose fibre ends. Some fibres may come away during the first few washes; this is normal for new terry and soon subsides.
Why should I avoid fabric softener?
Fabric softener coats the fibres with a fine film. The bath mat briefly feels smoother but absorbs water much less effectively. Giza cotton is naturally soft, and tumble drying on a medium heat restores volume to the pile.
What does 1200 g/m² mean for a bath mat?
This figure describes the fabric weight: how many grams a square metre of cotton terry weighs, rather than the weight of an individual bath mat. 1200 g/m² denotes a dense, heavy terry with plenty of cotton in a compact area.
How should the bath mat dry after a shower?
Spread it out so air can reach both sides, for example over the edge of the bath or a rail. The dense cotton holds moisture and needs a little time. Do not leave the bath mat folded or continually damp.
Will the bath mat shrink in the wash?
Each piece is prewashed at the workshop and is therefore preshrunk. Wash at 40 °C and dry on a medium rather than high heat.
How can I keep the colour of British Green 298 beautifully rich?
For the first few washes, wash British Green 298 separately or with similarly dark shades at 40 °C, and avoid chlorine bleach and optical brighteners: chlorine can damage the fibres and alter the colour over time. Keep hair dye, skincare with fruit acids and chlorine-based cleaning products away from the bath mat.
Can I turn the bath mat over?
Yes. Both sides have dense terry pile, so the bath mat is reversible. The product images also show the reverse with a turned-back edge.
Which size should I choose?
Small measures 50 × 80 cm and fits in front of a basin or shower, or in a guest bathroom. Large measures 60 × 100 cm and provides around half as much space again, ideal in front of a bath or spacious shower. Measure your available floor space before choosing.
Is the bath mat available in custom sizes?
Yes. Custom sizes can be ordered on request. Let us know your chosen dimensions; we will be happy to advise you personally.
Is the bath mat exactly the same colour as the towels?
The bath mat and towels share the same colour code 298 and are colour-coordinated. Differences in texture, lighting and dye batches can slightly alter their appearance, however, so we cannot guarantee an exact colour match.
Are there matching towels and a bathrobe?
Yes. The Super Pile towel set British Green 298, with a shower towel, comfort towel and two guest towels, and the Unisex Couture bathrobe for women and men complement the bath mat. Both are ordered separately.
Where is the bath mat made?
At the Abyss & Habidecor workshop near Viseu in Portugal, made to order, prewashed and preshrunk.
